Day One: Dingle Day Tour

The Dingle Peninsula which stretches out into the Atlantic ocean, is the most northerly of the mountainous promontories which forms the indented coast of South-west Ireland. It is particularly notable in its scenery of the mountain and coast and is of interest on account of its antiquities.

From Slea Head one can see the Blasket Islands which are the last outposts of Europe and are known as the “next parish to America”. They are famous for the literary and linguistic heritage of the former inhabitants. However, these remote islands have been uninhabited since the 1950’s following an evacuation. This Western end of the peninsula is a Gaeltacht area that has produced a number of nationally notable authors and poets: O’Siochfhradha and Peig Sayers among others. Being an Irish speaking district traditional customs are still very much alive.

The Dingle peninsula is named after the town of Dingle. The peninsula is also commonly called Corca Dhuibhne even when those referring to it are speaking in English. Dingle was also the chief port of Kerry in the old Spanish trading days and in the reign of Queen Elizabeth was important enough to be a walled town.

The peninsula is the location of numerous prehistoric and early medieval remains – for example, the Gallarus Oratory in the very west of the peninsula near the village of Baile an Fheirtearaigh in Ard na Caithe.

This is an ideal opportunity for you to forget about the left hand side of the road and let our knowledgeable and friendly guides take care of you for the day.

Day Two: Killarney National Park Guided Walk

Take a relaxing walk with a local guide through Killarney's beautiful National Park. Walks are of interest to those who enjoy stunning scenery as lakes, rivers, mountains and woodlands are all on view. Information on flora & fauna as well as wildlife will be provided by your guide. In season, you will see rich local flora including wild mint, garlic and myrtle also unusual trees such as the Arbutus (Strawberry Tree), Fuscia and Monte Rey Pines. It should be possible to sight the native red deer or the Japanese Sika introduced here in the mid 19th Century as well the rare Kerry cow, brought to Ireland by the Celts.

Visit ancient places like the old copper mines which date back some 4000 years and the 15th Century Ross Castle. See where Brother Cudda slept for 200 years, where Queen Victoria visited in 1861 and where President De Gaulle of France stayed in 1969. Also, in the same year, where part of the award winning Ryan's Daughter, starring Robert Mitchum was filmed.

The walking tour departs after breakfast at 11.00am each morning and tours are given in English by your local guide Richard Clancy (who also speaks Irish, some Spanish, Italian, German).
